TARBERT has two grocery shops including a butcher and off-licence, a filling station, post office, tea rooms. Good food at The Hebrides Hotel and The Harris Hotel, both licensed premises. Fish and Chip shop in Main Street, open at peak times. The Harris Sports Centre is located in Tarbert School. It boasts a spa, sauna, fitness suite and swimming pool. Visit the famous Harris Tweed factory shop in Tarbert, located next to the new Harris Distillery with its shop and tea room The Tourist Information Centre is conveniently situated in the village car park if you need help planning your visits. We have a selection of information pamphlets in the house for you to peruse at your leisure. |
WEST COAST BEACHES Gorgeous unspoilt white shell-sand beaches on the west side of the island, with very few people around...
WILDLIFE Seals at Finsbay, Eagles in the North Harris hills, see the Eagle Observatory. You may well see porpoises and dolphins from Cluer Point WALKING Why not climb the Clisham? It is the highest peak in the Western Isles, 799m (Corbett). Or walk the track out to the Scalpay lighthouse. You may see gannets diving from there. There are plenty of walkable tracks for ramblers. TENNIS Play tennis on the most remote court in Britain. In a beautiful setting overlooking the Atlantic ocean on the road to Husinish. A top class artificial grass surface and a cosy wooden pavilion. GOLF Have a round of golf at Scarista golf course. |
ST KILDA Book a boat trip to St Kilda, the must-see excursion. Very popular and must be booked in advance.
FISHING Loch or Sea fishing ARTS Many local artists, photographers and crafts people sell original and evocative work from their studios. On the east side of Harris are Willie Fulton's Gallery. Skoon Art cafe, Finsbay Gallery, Holmasaig Gallery and the Mission House, all showing local work for viewing and purchase. NORTHTON Visit the Seallam! heritage centre to find out more about the history of the island. ST CLEMENTS CHURCH, RODEL The only pre-Reformation church in Harris, restored by the Countess of Dunmore. Wonderful carved tombstones of the MacLeod clan and associated warriors, from centuries past. |
